BoxPark, known for being the biggest food, cultural and social hub in London, will be taking place in the Baltic Triangle district in September 2023. The award-winning food, retail and leisure operator, which already operates three locations in the capital, has announced plans to open a new complex at Cains Brewery Village.
As their own website states: “BOXPARK brings communities together by providing the best street food, drinks and entertainment under one roof.”
The founder and ex-CEO of Boxpark is Roger Wade, an entrepreneur and independent retail supporter that believed in a mix of culture, entertainment and fashion. However, he stepped down as CEO of the company 6 months ago, sold a major part of his shares to LDC and handed over the reins to the managing director Simon Champion.
Wade’s decision was made to expand his business journey and to keep on exploring new horizons: “It’s been a great ride over the past 10 years but it’s time to jump off and explore new opportunities.”
BoxPark’s history
BoxPark has a lot of history and it goes all the way back to 2011. It all began when Roger Wade, founder and former CEO of BoxPack at the moment, opened the world’s first pop-up mall in the heart of London, Shoreditch. He stated that “brands were looking for a home that was different from the high streets, and BoxPark specifically caters for brands”.
Wade had the initiative to combine different aspects such as youth, food, culture, clothes and music in one building; and that’s what it’s become throughout the years.
In 2015, the BoxPark team was planning to open a second building in Croydon, South London. This city is known for being youthful, adventurous and with an optimistic spirit; which is why Wade and their team thought it would be an amazing opportunity to expand their horizons.
This era implemented the food business into the mall. “We’ve started to understand that people also see food as entertainment”, said Wade.
One year later, they finally opened the second BoxPark in London (Croydon). It instantly became very successful and truly attracted their principal targets.
Later in 2017, BoxPark had the honor to have the famous singer Stormzy do a show at their building. This event got the company to get a lot of attention and to attract a lot of new people.
During 2018, Boxpark announced that it was going to “open a new branch office located in Wembley with the same structure as Croydon and Shoreditch”.
The year 2019 was a brilliant year for Boxpark because they hosted over 1000 events in their different three venues. There were different acts such as concerts or sports events.
As we all know, 2020 was a crazy year due to Covid-19, but Boxpark knew how to act and to entry. Despite the complications of Covid, Boxpark kept working like previous years and they offered various performances.
During April of 2021, Boxpark opened completely and customers took outdoor dining, takeaway and shopping. In May, indoor dining was back for everyone
Communities
Boxpark was nominated in 2021 to be the best company to help people between 8 to 25 with disabilities. This nomination was given by the legacy youth zone, a business from Croydon, near London, that helps the local community not to get involved in crime and drugs.
BoxPark also helps offers “Hero Discounts” for people who work at risky jobs such as NHS, firefighters, nurses, police officers… throughout the country.
Sustainability is a big deal for them. BoxPark started with the idea of recycling shipping containers to shelter different businesses inside. Most of the restaurants inside use recyclable packaging and efficient lighting. The main goal of Boxpark is to be a greener business and help the earth to be a better place.
Boxpark also has different partnerships with different businesses from different sectors. Some of these partnerships include Crystal Palace (the south London football club), Wembley Park, the Brent Council, Develop Creydon… among others.
There are different hotels that have partnerships with Boxpark as well, such as Shroeditch Hart Hotel, Montcalm East Hotel and Hilton Wembley and Croydon in London.
Over the years, BoxPark has won many awards Until today, they’ve won 9 awards. Some of them are truly noticeable such as the New London Awards in 2017, the Drum Awards in 2021 and the Restaurant Marketer and Innovator 2022.
